How Our Season Works
A season built so every kid develops – whether it’s their first season or their fifth.
Most leagues throw new players into full-rules basketball on day one. Bloom doesn’t. Here’s how our 10-12 week season is structured.
The Problem With Most Leagues
Full rules from day one doesn’t work.
Picture a 9-year-old’s first basketball game. They’ve never played organized ball. The whistle blows, the other team’s best player picks them up full-court, double-teams them, and steals the ball – five times. They score zero. By the drive home, they’re wondering if basketball is for them.
In most leagues, new players get overwhelmed and experienced players just exploit the mismatch. Nobody really develops – the gap only widens. Bloom is structured differently, and deliberately.
The Four-Phase Season
Ten to twelve weeks, four phases.
Weeks 1-2
Assessment
No games yet. Coaches evaluate every player’s skill level, then form teams by grade and ability – so kids play with peers at similar starting points, not against players three years ahead of them.
Weeks 3-6
Controlled Play
Games begin with modified rules for four weeks – man-to-man defense only, no full-court press, and no double-teaming. New players get real game experience without being trapped in the backcourt. These aren’t “easy” rules; they’re how the best academies teach the game properly.
Weeks 7-8
Competitive Play
Full basketball rules. Full-court press and double-teaming allowed. By now every player has four weeks of real game experience – so when the intensity rises, they’re ready for it, not blindsided.
Weeks 9-10
Playoffs + All-Star Day
A playoff tournament, then a celebratory All-Star Day – All-Star games, skills competitions for every player, six awards per division, and pizza for all. No one is left behind.
The calendar respects your family.
Bloom seasons deliberately skip Thanksgiving week, winter break, and spring break. Plan your vacation, visit grandparents, take the trip. The season works around your school calendar – not the other way around.
Now you know how the season works.
Registration is open for our upcoming season.
