Our Story
The basketball league Bay Area families have been looking for.
Real development, experienced coaches, and a schedule that fits your family.
How It Started
It started with one parent looking for something better.
BloomSports was founded by Raj Sathyaseelan, who started out doing what countless Bay Area parents do – looking for a good basketball program for his son. He didn’t just sign his son up; he stepped in to coach the team himself.
As a volunteer coach, he saw the problems from the inside. Coaches were underpaid and undervalued. Player development and the parent experience were an afterthought for organizers. New players who genuinely wanted to learn had few real chances to build their skills or gain meaningful game experience – and the AAU and club programs that did offer real coaching were far too competitive for a child just starting out.
So Raj decided to build the program he had been looking for. In 2018, BloomSports officially launched – a league designed to put players and families first.
How The League Evolved
From tournaments to a true developmental league.
In its early years, BloomSports played in AAU tournaments throughout the Bay Area. Over time, it became clear that format worked against the very thing we cared about most. It was too focused on games and not enough on teaching, it was expensive for families, and it took up most of their Saturdays.
After COVID, we made a deliberate change – moving to the developmental league format BloomSports runs today. A structured season that teaches the game, keeps costs reasonable, holds games on weeknights, and gives families their weekends back.
“I wanted to level the playing field – a place where every player can develop and love the game, with a great experience for families, at a price that makes sense.”
Raj Sathyaseelan – Founder, BloomSportsA Bay Area parent and finance professional.
